Sexual dysfunction is defined as the inability to fully enjoy sexual intercourse. Sexual dysfunctions are disorders that interfere with a full sexual response cycle. These disorders make it difficult for a person to enjoy or to have sexual intercourse. Sexual dysfunction affects psychologically, bringing on depression and anxiety. Sexual dysfunction problem is common but it is a topic many people are hesitant to discuss.

Sexual dysfunction can be a result of physical or psychological problem:
Physical causes : Heart disease, diabetes, hormonal imbalance, alcohol.

Psychological causes : These include work stress and anxiety, relationship problem, depression.

Sexual dysfunction takes different forms in men and women. Sexual dysfunction can be life long or temporary.
A man has sexual dysfunction if he :
• is not able to obtain erection
• is unable to have an erection sufficient for pleasurable intercourse
• feels pain during intercourse
• lacks sexual desire
A woman is having sexual dysfunction problem if she:
• has difficulty in achieving orgasm
• has pain during intercourse
• lacks sexual desire
• has inadequate lubrication

Types of sexual dysfunction

Female sexual dysfunction includes :
• Painful intercourse
• Sexual arousal disorder
• Orgasmic disorder

Male sexual dysfunction includes
• Erectile dysfunction
• Premature dysfunction
• Retarded ejaculation

Can sexual dysfunction be prevented?

Sexual dysfunction cannot be treated, but dealing with the psychological causes can help to cope with the problem when it occurs. There are some things you can do to help maintain good sexual function :
• Follow your doctor’s treatment
• Quit smoking
• Limit your alcohol intake
• Share your concerns with your partners
