Male pattern baldness

Wednesday, March 25, 2009

Male pattern baldness also known as alopecia is most common type of hair loss in men. Male pattern baldness affects about 60% of men by the age of 35. Baldness is not a disease but totally due to aging, testosterone and heredity. It is caused by hormones and genetic predisposition.

The typical pattern of male pattern baldness begins at the hairline. Baldness occurs when follicles shrink, resulting into thinner and shorter hair. Hormone testosterone present in high level in males is converted to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by enzyme 5-alpha reductase. DHT has negative effect on hair follicles. It slows down the hair growth, and produces thinner and shorter hair; sometimes it stops hair growth from the follicles completely. DHT level increases with age.

The progression of male pattern baldness can be stopped by reducing the DHT in both hair follicles and bloodstream. DHT blockers can be used to treat DHT level. There are various products available in market to decrease the level of DHT. Propecia Finasteride is the only FDA approved prescription medicine to treat male pattern baldness. It works by inhibiting the conversion of testosterone to DHT, thereby stopping the production of DHT.

DHT and Hair loss

Thursday, March 19, 2009

Hair loss is a frustrating experience for millions of men all over the world. Most men tend to lose hair due to hormonal changes in the body. Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is considered to be the main cause of hair loss in men. DHT is created naturally inside the body when the enzyme 5 alpha reductase combines with the hormone testosterone. It is called androgenetic alopecia.

When the enzyme 5 alpha reductase combines with testosterone, it reduces the size of follicles of hair to a small size that induce hair fall. The effect of DHT varies in men and women. As men have more testosterone, hair loss due to DHT is more common in men. This is the main cause of balding in men. Hair loss due to DHT in men occurs in patches while in women it happens through thinning of hair.

Majority of men lose hair as they age. The cause of hair loss can be stress, genes, poor diet, pollution or DHT. Hair loss caused by DHT can be treated with the use of DHT blockers. There are many products available in market promising to treat hair loss, but only a few of them block DHT. Propecia is the only FDA approved prescription treatment for hair loss. Propecia works by preventing the conversion of testosterone to DHT. It is strongly recommended to consult dermatologist for best hair loss treatment.

Hair loss is the main concern of many people today. Hair is the important part of human body; it gives the look that is needed to project personality externally. Shedding 80 – 100 hairs a day is considered normal. When a hair is shed, it is replaced by a new hair from the same follicle. If you estimate that your hair loss is more than what is expected, consult your dermatologist immediately.

There are number of reasons of hair loss. Some of the common causes are diseases, inherited factors, medicines, poor nutrition, stress, injury or aging.

  • Heredity: Pattern baldness is generally the result of heredity or hormones. Hair loss due to hereditary usually becomes apparent in men in their late 20’s.
  • Diseases: Disease such as diabetes can cause hair loss. Infection caused by cuts or even medical operations may cause hair loss.
  • Medicines: Some medications that may cause hair loss include birth control pills, overdose of vitamin A or medicines used to treat gout.
  • Poor nutrition: Hair is made up of a form of protein. Poor nutrition, especially lack of protein and iron in the diet can result into hair loss.
  • Stress: Physical stress or mental stress due to surgery or illness may result to hair loss three to four months after the stress.
  • Injury: Injuries to scalp can damage hair follicles and cause hair loss.
  • Aging: Aging weakens the hair follicles; the active growth phase of hair becomes shorter as age progresses.

Some hair loss treatments can actually stop or even reverse hair loss. Discuss with your doctor all of the possibilities that could cause hair loss. Causes like stress, diseases, medicines, poor nutrition are temporary and get cured with time. Permanent hair loss often caused by hormonal imbalance can be treated by medications like Propecia or another option is hair transplant surgery. Propecia is a FDA approved proved hair loss treatment.
