Impotence is a latin word meaning loss of power. A more perfect term is erectile dysfunction. Impotence can occur at any age but it is less common in younger men. Although when the term impotence comes up most people assume that it only relates to older men, this is absolutely wrong, the fact that impotence in young men does occur should be realized by everyone. It is believed that impotence is due to psychological factors. But with new research findings the main factors of impotence is due to physical factors such as smoking, alcohol, drugs etc.
Impotence in young people is now more common and one of the impotant factors that are contributing to this is smoking. The study shows that men with high blood pressure who smoke are 26 times more likely to have erectile dysfunction. Many diseases caused by smoking involve blockage of arteries, meaning smoking inhibits the flow of blood throughout the body. Impotence is the result of arterial blockage. It is possible to fully or partially recover erectile function by just quitting smoking. Another common reason for impotence problem is effect of alcohol, recreational drugs. Drug like cocaine can cause impotence. Some medicines particularly for high blood pressure and diabetes treatment can result into sexual dysfunction. Common psychological causes of impotence include:
• Depression
• Relationship problem
• Exertion
• Anxiety
In many cases the cause of impotence is mixture of psychological and physical causes.
